Honest groundwork, grown from the soil up.
The story behind Cedar Pathfield

Landscapes that settle in and stay.

Cedar Pathfield does the kind of groundwork that looks better after two seasons than it did on day one. Planting, paving, drainage, and the slow work of getting a garden right.

Our story

The story behind Cedar Pathfield

Tom Calloway started Cedar Pathfield in the spring of 2014 after eight years working for a large landscaping contractor in the East Midlands. The company was good at volume. It was less good at slowing down. Tom spent those years learning the technical side properly, how to read a gradient, how to set a kerb line, how to lay a French drain that will still be working in twenty years. But he grew tired of the pace and the corners that got cut when a job needed to be finished by Friday. He left in January 2014 with a second-hand Ifor Williams trailer and a list of three potential clients.

How to Fix a Waterlogged Garden Properly

A garden that holds water after rain is not just an inconvenience. Over time, standing water kills grass roots, rots fence posts, and makes a patio unusable for half the year. The frustrating thing is that most waterlogging problems are fixable, but only if you identify the right cause first. Throwing a soakaway at a compaction problem will not help. Regrading a patio will not fix a high water table. Here is how to read what is actually happening.

Choosing Natural Stone for Garden Paving

Natural stone paving is one of those things that looks straightforward until you start looking at samples. There are dozens of types, several finishes, and a significant difference in quality between suppliers. We have been laying natural stone since 2014 and we have made enough mistakes along the way to know what to look for and what to avoid.

Establishing a New Lawn from Turf: What Actually Works

A new turf lawn looks good the day it goes down. Whether it looks good in six months depends almost entirely on what happened before the turf arrived. We have laid a lot of lawns since 2014 and the ones that have failed, or needed remedial work, have almost always failed because of what was under the turf rather than the turf itself.

How we work

Site reading before anything else
We spend the first visit watching how water moves, where the shade falls, and what the soil is doing. Most problems in a garden start with skipping this step.
Materials sourced close to home
Stone, gravel, and timber come from suppliers within about 40 miles. Shorter supply chains mean we know the quality before it arrives on your drive.
Planting that suits the ground
We do not drop in whatever is fashionable. We look at your soil type, your aspect, and what was there before, then choose plants that will actually thrive.
