A garden that holds water after rain is not just an inconvenience. Over time, standing water kills grass roots, rots fence posts, and makes a patio unusable for half the year. The frustrating thing is that most waterlogging problems are fixable, but only if you identify the right cause first. Throwing a soakaway at a compaction problem will not help. Regrading a patio will not fix a high water table. Here is how to read what is actually happening.
The three most common causes ¶
Most waterlogged gardens fall into one of three categories. The first is compaction: the top layer of soil has been compressed by foot traffic, machinery, or years of neglect until water cannot pass through it. The second is poor grading: the ground or paving is falling toward the house or toward a low point with nowhere for the water to go. The third is a naturally high water table, which is less common but more difficult to fix. Identifying which one you have is the first step.
How to test for compaction ¶
Push a metal rod or a screwdriver into the soil after rain. If it stops within the top 150mm, the soil is compacted. A simple compaction test like this takes two minutes and tells you more than looking at the surface. Compacted soil can often be improved with deep aeration, a top-dress of sharp sand and organic matter, and time. In severe cases, the top layer needs to be removed and replaced with properly structured topsoil.
Fixing grading problems on a patio or path ¶
A paved surface should fall at a minimum of 1-in-80 away from any building. That is about 12mm of fall for every metre of paving. If your patio was laid without checking this, or if it has settled unevenly over the years, the only real fix is to lift and relay. It is disruptive but it is a one-time job done properly. Adding a channel drain at the low point can help in mild cases without a full relay.
When a soakaway is the right answer ¶
A soakaway works by collecting water in a rubble-filled pit and letting it disperse slowly into the surrounding soil. It is effective when the soil around the soakaway is free-draining and the water table is low enough to accept the discharge. A soakaway dug into clay-heavy soil will fill up and stop working within a season. Before digging one, do a simple percolation test: dig a hole 300mm deep, fill it with water, and time how long it takes to drain. If it takes more than four hours, a soakaway is not the right solution.
French drains and when to use them ¶
A French drain is a perforated pipe laid in a gravel-filled trench that intercepts water moving through the soil and redirects it to a discharge point. It is particularly useful along boundaries, at the base of slopes, and around the perimeter of lawns that stay wet. The key is getting the fall right and making sure the discharge point can handle the volume. We have installed French drains that have transformed gardens that had been wet for decades.
